I’ve reached a point where I am absolutely weary of folks who use their command of scripture to bludgeon their opposition into submission. The Gospel message is one of salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8), rooted in love (Matthew 22:37-40)
This Good news not only redeemed folks but it CHANGED folks! Jesus not only changed the SPIRITUAL condition of the people He encountered but their PHYSICAL condition as well. Therefore, as emulators of Christ, we must grow into the expectation that when we preach His Word, that physical as well as spiritual change WILL occur.
A “gospel” that supposes some are destined to remain unsaved or is content to see any soul oppressed, sick, in pain or impoverished is not good news at all. A “gospel” that is not seasoned with love and grace, isn’t.
For this cause, I strive to preach like Paul, not with the eloquence of men but with the power of God (1 Corinthians 2:4). The same power that raised Jesus from the dead has been given to us (Romans 8:11) not to be thermometers, merely taking the temperature of (and thus, emulating) our environment, but to be THERMOSTATS, ready to change our environment according to the Word of God.
