I am saddened by the murder of the children in Connecticut. This is a tragedy that, when observed in retrospect, will be seen as preventable. The people who conceive such heinous crimes often show subtle signs that something is amiss in their lives.
As we begin the inevitable search for answers, lets keep a few things in mind…
1. This was not the will of God. It was not His judgement upon America for homosexual marriage, legalization of abortion, elimination of prayer in school, or anything else. John 10:10 CLEARLY says, “The thief comes but to steal, kill, and destroy, but I am come that they have life, and life more abundantly.” This means if it is stealing from you, killing you, or destroying you, IT AIN’T GOD!
2. This is neither the time nor place to discuss the veracity of gun control – or lack thereof. This time of mourning and introspection must not become political fodder. Show some respect, okay?
3. This should serve as a reminder to every parent to love on their children. How many parents of these children forgot to tell them, “I love you?” How many were irritated that their kids took too long to get ready or spilled their cereal this morning? Life is fragile; kids are precious. Treat both accordingly.
4. This should serve as a reminder to all saints to pray. Not just for themselves. Not just for their own children. But for others, too. Commit to praying as consistently and frequently as possible. Ask God to lay a burden for a stranger on your heart – then pray fervently for them.
There will be ample opportunity to scrutinize the components of this tragedy. Let’s not spend so much time being “armchair investigators” as we are repairers of the breach. Remember, there are parents who put gifts under their CHRISTmas tree whose children will never open them.
Ask God what can YOU do to help NOW. Then do it.
