One of the most important things we do as Kingdom Citizens is win souls. Every soul won for Jesus is one soul that will not spend eternity in eternal separation from God. The important — and I mean, IMPORTANT — thing is that we are set on making disciples, not mere converts.
One of the things you’ll hear about the importance of soul winning is that you save souls from hell. And the conventional wisdom is that when you save a soul from a burning hell, you pull them out of the fire.
And if this is your assumption, you’re partially right. Let’s take a look at a key passage of Scripture:
(Jude 1:22-23 ESV) 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
The first thing we need to know, here, is that we must have compassion. We must have a heart of compassion. Jesus said by our love shall all men know we are His disciples (John 13:24-25). So, then, love is the hallmark of salvation. If we reverse-engineer this, we see that compassion is a chief component of love because Jesus had compassion for all who came to Him. If we back this up a step more, we find that empathy is key to compassion.
